Public health has historically relied on a familiar playbook: education, guidelines, and behavioral messaging.
Make no mistake, these tools still matter. But they were designed for a different environment. Today’s health challenges are shaped by digital systems that are continuous, algorithm-driven, and environmentally embedded.

Algorithmic Transparency: Forcing open the black box to understand exactly how proprietary algorithms shape exposure, dictate behavior, and monetize attention.
Institutional Involvement: Schools, healthcare networks, and policymakers stepping out of the passenger seat and engaging directly with digital environments.
These are not simple solutions. But they reflect a necessary, mature shift from blaming individual responsibility to demanding system accountability.

Consider how environments influence behavior in real time.
In one scenario, a stressed student is simply told by a counselor to "limit their screen time."
In a designed scenario, the digital system itself inherently limits hyper-exposure, reduces reinforcement loops, and supports healthier interaction patterns by default. The second approach does not rely solely on the self-control of a 14-year-old fighting against a billion-dollar supercomputer. It changes the conditions in which their decisions are made.
